The stream begins on Friday April 17, but only for a brief time: viewers in the United Kingdom and Ireland can watch it for one day only, while those elsewhere in the world get 48 hours. ‘The Phantom of the Opera’: what to expect This is Andrew Lloyd Webber's greatest hit of them all: a timeless tale of candlelit romance between a pretty young singer and the mask-wearing serial killer who has been stalking her from his subterranean lair beneath a 19th-century Parisian opera house. The libretto, adapted from Gaston Leroux's novel, is by Charles Hart, Richard Stilgoe and Lloyd Webber. If you're like about 130 million other people on the planet, there's a good chance you have seen 'Phantom' already—it is by far the longest-running show in Broadway history, and has grossed more than $6 billion worldwide—but this performance differs from Harold Prince's classic original staging. To mark the musical's 25th anniversary in 2011, Laurence Connor directed a deluxe new staging of the show at London's grand Royal Albert Hall, produced by Cameron Mackintosh, with some 200 performers in the cast and orchestra. Footage from all three performances were edited together to create this film record, which was later shown in cinemas. The lovely Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess, who had portrayed the Phantom and Christine in Lloyd Webber's ill-fated 'POTO' sequel 'Love Never Dies' a year earlier, reunite to play the OG (Opera Ghost) versions in this production, with good support from Hadley Fraser as the uninteresting love interest Raoul and Wendy Ferguson as the demanding diva Carlotta. As the 25th-anniversary staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical is streamed online, its star tells stories of fandom and the Phantom ‘I wanted to make people feel like I’d just been made to feel’ … Ramin Karimloo as the Phantom in 2011 I’d wanted to play the Phantom since I was 12. I saw it on a school trip. I had been a typical small-town Canadian boy who played ice hockey. My life changed that day. I wanted to make people feel like I’d just been made to feel. Colm Wilkinson was extraordinary in the role – it was almost as if every note he sang would be his last. Because I came from such a small town, ignorance was bliss. If I told anyone that’s what I wanted to do, they’d say: “Cool, OK! ” No one told you me how hard it would be. The Phantom is unhinged. He kills people, he’s manipulative, but there’s something about him as an underdog. This is what society has created. How can you not have compassion or empathy for him? I couldn’t get into the role when we were rehearsing. But putting the makeup and the mask on helped. Usually it’s good to work in a character’s shoes – with this part I needed the face and mask. I was in my attic the other day and found a bunch of them from Phantom and the sequel, Love Never Dies. I gave one of them to Nicole Scherzinger after we did the Royal Variety performance because she did such an extraordinary job. Once it became clear this would be our norm, I still wanted to sing. So we performed Once Upon Another Time from Love Never Dies together online. I’m just as much a fan of the show as I am the Phantom. I grew up loving it and then I happened to be the Phantom for a moment in time and now I’m a fan again. It will be great to relive it with everyone. This is a crazy time. We are all at home looking for something to help us forget. It should be quite a special moment.
